Optoelectronics, a field with a future
The Department of Optoelectronics (KOEL) runs the Optoelectronics specialisation within the Electronics and Telecommunications programme. We build new technologies by designing solutions that combine electronics and light. Our work covers sensors based on nanotechnology, fibre-optic techniques for communication and measurement, vision and imaging systems, and the prototyping and construction of measurement setups.
We use a range of optical measurement methods to characterise technical and industrial objects and to detect chemical compounds and biological substances. We also produce electronic and optical materials using methods from materials engineering and nanotechnology.
We design electronic circuits, interferometers, and optical and electrochemical sensors, and we apply artificial intelligence algorithms to chemical detection, environmental protection, and biomedicine.
Spectroscopic methods such as UV-VIS, NIR, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy allow us to characterise the molecular structure of objects, layers, and materials, as well as chemical compounds, pollutants, disease markers, bacteria, and viruses.
Imaging and optical coherence tomography (OCT) let us analyse surfaces and also look inside the objects under study without damaging them.
We collaborate with research centres worldwide (Poland, USA, Germany, France, Finland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, India, and others) and carry out commissioned work and measurements for industry.
