Lecture

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the concept of a data warehouse, its applications, and methods for constructing and querying data warehouses. Students also learn the basics of business intelligence

The lecture covers the following topics:

  1. Basic concepts of data warehousing 
  2. Multidimensional data model in data warehouses
  3. Data warehouse design: star and snowflake schemas
  4. Basic operations on OLAP cubes 
  5. Memory models in data warehouses 
  6. ETL processes (Extract, Transform, Load)
  7. Logical and physical architecture of the data warehouse 
  8. Data Warehouse Applications. Examples. 
  9. Overview of OLAP servers available on the market 
  10. Planning an enterprise data warehouse 
  11. MDX language 
  12. SQL extensions - OLAP cube operations 
  13. Business intelligence tools

Laboratory

The data warehouse laboratory includes:

  1. Familiarity with the MS SQL Analysis Services environment.
  2. Designing a sample data warehouse.
  3. Creating a data warehouse schema in the MS SQL Analysis Services environment.
  4. Preparing a training data set.
  5. Planning and executing a sample ETL process.
  6. Interactive data warehouse testing.
  7. Designing MDX queries.
  8. Launching and executing designed MDX queries.
  9. Familiarization with the selected business intelligence tool.
  10. Planning the use of business intelligence tools for strategic analyses.
  11. Carrying out exercises with a business intelligence tool (executing planned reports and analyzing them)
