The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the concept of a data warehouse, its applications, and methods for constructing and querying data warehouses. Students also learn the basics of business intelligence.
The lecture covers the following topics:
- Basic concepts of data warehousing
- Multidimensional data model in data warehouses
- Data warehouse design: star and snowflake schemas
- Basic operations on OLAP cubes
- Memory models in data warehouses
- ETL processes (Extract, Transform, Load)
- Logical and physical architecture of the data warehouse
- Data Warehouse Applications. Examples.
- Overview of OLAP servers available on the market
- Planning an enterprise data warehouse
- MDX language
- SQL extensions - OLAP cube operations
- Business intelligence tools
Laboratory
The data warehouse laboratory includes:
- Familiarity with the MS SQL Analysis Services environment.
- Designing a sample data warehouse.
- Creating a data warehouse schema in the MS SQL Analysis Services environment.
- Preparing a training data set.
- Planning and executing a sample ETL process.
- Interactive data warehouse testing.
- Designing MDX queries.
- Launching and executing designed MDX queries.
- Familiarization with the selected business intelligence tool.
- Planning the use of business intelligence tools for strategic analyses.
- Carrying out exercises with a business intelligence tool (executing planned reports and analyzing them)
