The Department of Geoinformatics conducts scientific research in the field of Geoscience and applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In particular, the Department's research focuses on:

  • applications of GIS in homeland security,
  • three-dimensional visualization and spatial analysis of geographical data,
  • numerical weather prediction systems,
  • navigation techniques in mobile GIS,
  • monitoring and mapping of marine environment,
  • detection and classification of seabed types on the basis of single and multibeam sonar echo characteristics,
  • advanced techniques of satellite imaging.

The Department commands specialized equipment for collecting geographical data, including:

  • HRPT/MetOp 1.5 m satellite station,
  • EUMETCast station,
  • remote controlled drone equipped with a camera,
  • Kongsberg multibeam echosounder.

A broad selection of data sources allows the Department employees a 24-hour access to latest information regarding the situation in Poland as well as the Baltic Sea. In particular, the available data includes:

  • EUMETCast data,
  • numerical weather predictions,
  • AVHRR.

In addition, the Department owns a dedicated server room, three computer laboratories and a vast network of mobile devices.
